3 Things I Do That Allow Me to Earn $8,000 on Medium This Year
They are simple but effective tips
Many would most likely roll their eyes when seeing a title of such.
I don’t really optimize my title enough.
If you have seen my latest earnings report card you should probably know my total YTD earnings as of October was $8,120.11, well I didn’t know that until I added them up.
I can say for a fact that all tips are correlated so this is not just about earnings.
So whenever I read a tip about writing or Medium in general I try to reflect it on a broader base, it is useful when I use it, if not it will dissolve by itself.
That is mainly the reason why many if not all tips sound very general or generic if you take a closer look, the ones that do it best add a layer of personal experience and their existing audience does matter.
I would say sometimes I was lucky or you can call it being at the right place when the audience wanted to know about a topic the most.
I have published over 700 stories now, if you do a plain math that would be about $11.60 per article. The pay really has been dropping as of last month with 85 new articles, they only add up to a little over $500, which is about $6 per article.
Now do you see besides luck there is a lot more involved?
I’m sure you can write a $6 article once in a while, well that is me, most articles earn less than $5 now.
With all this being said the first tip will be:
1. Expectation Adjustment.
For some, you are the media or the outlet of a piece of information.
We are all here trying to express ourselves with words.
When it comes to earnings, it is not as random as it seems, you publish you get paid when a reader reads and engages.
The only part that we don’t see is who read how long and how much the fake engagement damaged our earnings.
Everything is pretty consistent as far as I can tell.
Do keep in mind that Medium does adjust the combination of weighting towards earning month to month or whenever they want.
So when you see things change, don’t doubt it if you are seeing it, adjust your expectations and keep moving.
I can only expect to write another article when the one before is not doing so well or dies off. Without this piece of mind, I would not stay for this long.
Learn to outlast changes because there will always be one.
2. Write For Yourself First.
This is different from writing for an audience or not, I am talking about finishing your writing before you do anything else.
You should have a time or setting to complete your work before anything else, without your article consistently coming out, there would be additional earnings coming in.
In this day and age, media are everywhere, and our attention is constantly being split between whether should we consume or produce.
Maybe that is not what you are thinking at the moment but eventually, you would have to make a choice in between.
Regardless of who you are or what topic you like to write about, there is always the need to start with yourself, like self-care and love, it does have to be “me” first.
This is beyond publishing every day or whatever schedule you go by.
You will be setting a standard for yourself and the reader would either pick to go with it or to go with someone else.
There’s always another reader if you keep showing up.
3. Strategize The Who And Optimize The How.
Yes, who are you really writing for?
The audience?
The reader that writes?
Or the writer that reads?
The most common one we hear is I write whatever comes to mind.
Without putting any more context to this strategy, it is the best option that we have in order to start.
Doesn’t matter who your audience is, you did need to feel like writing to begin with.
After a short while you will see yourself leaning toward a certain topic. Whether it is giving a lesson about your life experience or just sharing some reflection, there will be somebody reading it.
Never worry about who will read it, as it will come when it comes.
The How
The one mindset that helped me last is looking at a glass half full is better than empty.
I mean you got somebody reading your work, it does not have to feel like why I only receive this amount of reading today.
You can say there is something wrong with the market or your audience is just not seeing your work, there is some truth to that but we can’t complain about our way to earn more or can we?
Rather than complaining maybe you can brag a bit, once in a while or just share your experience of your writing journey here.
Many writers here are allergic to saying that they are writing about writing or Medium maybe they once did but have grown out of it now.
But reality tells us we are even if we say a simple work like write, writing, writer, earnings or Medium, technically you are still writing about it and there is a lot of audience ready to read such articles, whether love or hate, it still get read.
Just like whatever you write it will get read but how many read and how much you can earn will depend on what you write about.
I have seen many viral articles and many writers who consistently deliver quality posts, they are very different but the good thing is that you get to choose who you want to be here.
Engagement and connection do help but the bottom line is where you want to go will directly impact how much you are going to earn and for how long.
These are the things I do constantly while rotating with other tasks in mind. There is more than one way but setting a good foundation would help us last a lot longer when we have to learn as we go to achieve something that we have not foreseen or imagined before.
Did you learn something new today?
