How I Got My First Gumroad Sale Again in 2025
Turn your post into a Gumroad product
I haven’t really tried to make money elsehwere. My loyal reader keeps on reminding me that I do have value to give.
May is about to change.
I know many writers are interested in Gumroad, like many, I didn’t know when or what to offer.
So I wrote what I know best with step by step, on what to do.
The product was created back in 2024 with an article I wrote here, it made one sale in 2024 and two sales in 2025.
I had to update the content for 2025 to make it easier to read and understand, as my writing should have improved.
Maybe that is why the 2nd sale came on May 1st. I know Gumroad can be a big earner, but I just haven’t got the confidence to sell my stuff yet.
The easiest thing to mess with our head is how to price our product or services, and how much the buyer is really willing to pay?
After getting a few paid subscribers on Substack, I realize people are willing to pay, but you have to deliver something that they want to read.
My online selling experience
I have a decade of experience with selling physical products online, mainly on Amazon and eBay. (about $2+ million in sales combined from 2014–2019)
So I must know something about selling. It turns out that I mainly sell through platforms and never use much ads, organic traffic is where I get most of my sales.
I thought about Amazon KDP before I started writing online. I probably will not make any meaningful money if I didn’t have this much writing practice.
I think I’m more prepared now, since I have something to write about and kind of know what I’m doing.
Getting traffic to Gumroad
I haven’t been marketing my Gumroad because I thought I needed to write that e-book before telling people I have something to offer on Gumroad.
I started putting my Gumroad link in almost every article since the beginning of the year, and you can see there is some traffic going on.
Product 1
I only have 2 products, one is a free newsletter like which is limited to 200 free spots. I used to be able to send out a newsletter back then, but now it requires me to make over $100 on Gumroad to send out an email with Gumroad, which is why Substack is a better option for a newsletter.
Product 2
The second product is an old article I wrote back in 2024 and just updated earlier this year in 2025.
It has practical steps on how to improve your traffic by engaging. It can work on different writing platforms where there are writers and readers.
I’m looking forward to converting more articles into a Gumroad product, however, I’m still not familiar with it since I have only created two types of products there.
I’ll also be showing any new products that I’m creating in the future. I’m still learning as I go. This reminds me of Substack, been there for about 5 months, still have many features that I haven’t used, and things that I don’t know about.
It’s a great learning experience. With Gumroad, you can create many kinds of products.
Gumroad has so many options to create products and offer services as well. Most of them, I don’t know what they are, but it will take some time to review them.
What everyone is concerned about is how to get traffic to your Gumroad. Take this article as an example, you have to know you can’t get anyone to buy by just showing up once, unless you have a reputation in a niche already.
Learn from those who are doing it
I actually saw an account that mainly writes about selling digital products of all kinds and trying to promote them in every single article. It seems to be working well, but that’s a bit too heavy of a marketer for me.
I’m still that person who lacks confidence in selling my work.
But after seeing everything that I saw for over 15 months of writing.
I think I can offer a better deal in improving others' workflow or in whatever I’m trying to sell. There are a lot of great and not-so-great tips out there.
