How to Create a Digital Product on Gumroad in 2025
Most writers make their first sale within a month
Depending on your niche or how far you have come, your digital product will sell at its own rate based on credibility, authority, and trust.
If you think you have nothing to offer, this is for you.
A step-by-step guide.
I’m new to Gumroad, but I have created two products and had a few sales without doing anything but driving traffic to them on Substack and Medium.
Now we’ve got that out of the way, the next thing is you know what digital product you want to create and sell. Like everyone else, I would go to Google or even watch videos on what to do.
But I find it easier and much more effective if you just go with trial and error. What can go wrong? You created something you didn’t mean to; just delete it or use it as a reference for your next product.
The most common one we see on the market is ebooks or mini-ebooks.
Let’s get into it.
For May, I’m looking to create at least one product up for sale, and it will be about growing on Substack.
Substack is currently the most undervalued platform with the greatest potential of reaching a larger audience and earnings for any new writers.
The first thing you need to know before creating is research, plus your own experience.
I have been growing on Subtack at a good rate, so selling advice or lessons about it makes sense.
Always make sure to check for demand.
Why choose Gumroad?
Here’s what they say:
Gumroad is perfect for anyone who makes and sells products. Writers, musicians, filmmakers, SaaS developers, educators (and all in-between) can sell on Gumroad to a worldwide audience.
We’re going to focus on Writers and selling to a worldwide audience.
Since I’m going to create a digital product about how to grow on Substack.
I first go to see what other offers are there and make sure the price and layout stand out. I’m not a designer or coder, so if I can do it, you can too.
There are many examples, you can take a look within your niche and use them as a guideline of what you might want to put or create, make sure to put your own examples and a screenshot of what you are trying to sell or teach.
Step 1.
The product I’ll select on the product page > New product, you’ll see one of the options for the digital product.
Step 2.
After you put a name or title of the product, you’ll come to the next step.
From here, you can put some description of what the product is about and a header image.
For pricing, I would select the “allow customers to pay what they want” option. My plan is to get some reviews first, so I’ll put this for free for now.
If you want to support me, you can come say hi, too, since we almost created this together.
Once you are done setting up here, you can go to the Content tab.
Step 3.
I have an article written already 3 days ago and was planning to use it as an intro or a free product, and later convert it into a paid one after I have written the step-by-step part of more practical steps on how to grow on Substack.
But the way, I choose the digital product because you can edit it as you go, it’s a living product, not sure if the e-book option is the same.
If you need a little bit more about the Gumroad product, you can go here later on.
You can also upload a file, but I prefer to copy and paste since it is not too long. I did some minor editing and made sure the formatting is okay, and it’s ready to go.
Step 4.
Press Publish and Continue at the far right top corner.
Now you can go back to the products page and you’ll see the newly created product.
Step 5.
Get your link and share or paste it anywhere you have a social media account.
Here’s the link we just created.
Grow Your Substack Account 0-100+ Subscribers Genuinely
I was a bit nervous when taking the steps since I hadn’t done them in a year.
But it wasn’t that bad.
Once you have something written, it’s just a matter of adjusting the small settings and seeing how you want to position it for what it is for.
By the way, I’m a newb at this, so if you are new it might help you.
There will only be 100 free spots for this digital product on how to grow on Substack.
And guess what, I can copy, paste, and create another Gumroad digital product.
Of course, if that would of happened, it would come with more detailed steps and more screenshots.
What I like about written lessons over video is that you actually need to take more time to rewind back to where you left off if you didn’t understand something, but with written ones, you can open a new tab and follow along step by step.
