I’m Growing on Substack — Stats and Earnings
3 paid subscribers, 9.8K views, and 650+ free subscribers
Today I’m on Substack for 130th days. I think it’s about time to share some stats and growth strategies.
Slowly growing, and the growth is real.
I have mainly focused on the topic of Medium and writing. The last time I wrote about my growth on Substack was 2 weeks ago, when I just reached 600 free subscribers.
My first paid subscriber was in February, followed by two more in March.
As of today, a month later, I’m still patiently waiting for the fourth one.
My newsletter is mainly run on appreciation, so it would take a while to see someone paying for something that is already free.
I always say that those who pay are also paying for those who are not. No hard feelings, I’m selling understanding rather than hoping someone will find my content and pay for it.
This model is not the most scalable way to grow, but it does give you an option to turn into and make changes.
One thing about running a free newsletter is that you get far more reach and build an audience over time in no time.
There are too many choices out there.
Reaching 1,000 followers soon.
Most writers do not pay attention to followers count, but I do look at them for growth reasons.
When you follow someone, the algorithm gets a signal that you want to see them again or more content like theirs.
Although my subscriber count is around 650, my follower count is nearly 1,000.
That means there are readers who like what they see but just lack of excitement for them to subscribe.
I found many writers on Substack only like to share a small portion of what they did (stats) or achieved; after all, the entire dashboard is how to show what is good or not.
The number of subscribers and the number of views actually matter
If we take 9808 views divided by 650 subscribers = 15.09.
Let’s call it 15. This number means that within a 30-day period, a subscriber has viewed your content about 15 times.
That's once every 2 days.
Not the best, as 290 of my subscribers were imported from Medium, which is also the reason why it's harder for me to show how it’s growing, since some of these with the 290 emails are from a year ago.
While many of them might no longer be active or even interested in any of my content. This is also the main reason the email open rate is low, however, there is a good chance that more of the subscribers are on the app instead.
However, as more subscribers grow, the more it gets balanced out, or I can go in and delete some of them.
One way we can cross-check is by the email opening rate, but that number does not include the in-app traffic.
650x20% = 130, my average views are from 150 to 300.
The number does match the overall email is about 2 times the views from the Substack app.
I’ll go into detail on this next time due to the length of this article.
Three things that I want to explore more before writing about them are:
The note feature
Chatroom
Engagement strategies
The main goal is to get more traction on notes and articles.
Yes, I’m shifting gears toward Substack content a little more as I do believe there is great potential there.
How is your growth on the platform you are focusing on?
